A major review of the state of the Welsh environment recently warned of "polluted rivers, failing soils" and "collapsing wildlife" - with one in five species at risk of extinction.
Perhaps Apple has some user studies that suggest otherwise, but I cannot see how dialling back the lines between interface and document is supposed to be beneficial for the user. It does not, in my use, result in less distraction while I am working in these apps. In fact, it often does the opposite. I do not think the prescription is rolling back to a decade-old design language. However, I think Apple should consider exploring the wealth of variables it can change to differentiate tools within toolbars, and to more clearly delineate window chrome from document.

In October 1992, a Circassian man by the name of Tevfik Esenç passed away at the age of 88. Esenç had been, as his gravestone attested, “the last person able to speak the language they called Ubykh.” An extreme example of the remarkable languages of the Caucasus mountains, Ubykh was articulated with all of 80 different consonants, compared to English’s 24. Regarding Ubykh, linguist John Colarusso noted that “any rigorous account of human phonetic perceptual capacity will have to take into account this precious marvel.” We know something particular about the human mind in large part thanks to Ubykh. And we know about Ubykh in large part thanks to Tevfik Esenç.
